Mumbai, 15 January, 2020: Mumbai-based Nanavati Super Speciality Hospital has announced its virtual holistic care programme - Parkinsons Support Group to guide patients with Parkinsons on tips for their holistic care. Amidst the low availability of medical care during the Covid-19 pandemic, the programme offers comprehensive, individualized and holistic support that addresses a patients clinical, physical, diet prudence and not to forget emotional needs.

The aim of the programme is to address the myriad challenges that patients with Parkinsons face and to aid them in understanding the approach towards a better lifestyle. Despite Parkinsons being a chronic ailment, its treatment entails not merely medication but a holistic approach that caters to even non-medical aspects of the disease. Even though movement disabilities are the most pre-eminent symptoms of Parkinsons, they get coupled with more non-motor symptoms over time.

Considering the various non-motor difficulties that the patients face, the programme comprises a series of sessions by experts who discuss various aspects of Parkinsons and how to deal with them. These sessions are led by psychologists and psychiatrists, physiotherapists, dieticians and nutritionists, sleep therapists, speech and swallowing therapists and urologists to deal with various aspects of lifestyle changes required as part of the treatment plan.

Elaborating on the objectives of this programme, Dr. Anil Venkitachalam, Consultant - (Neurology) and Movement Disorders - Centre for Neurosciences, Nanavati Super Speciality Hospital said “A comprehensive approach to deal with Parkinsons involves not just medical intervention but also non-medical care. The Parkinsons Support Group programme furthers the idea of day-to-day management of the disease which calls for a combination of exercise and therapies apart from medication. The core idea backing this initiative is to hand-hold patients living with Parkinsons, enabling them to take steps towards a better quality life.”

The programme is being conducted on the virtual platform and witnesses a regular presence of around 70 patients.
