KEEL-LAYING CEREMONY OF MARINE AMBULANCE BOAT FOR KERALA STATE FISHERIES DEPARTMENT.


The ‘KEEL-LAYING’ ceremony of First of the series (CSL Hull No. BY 110) of Three (3) Nos. Marine Ambulance Boats being built by Cochin Shipyard Ltd. (CSL), for the Department of Fisheries, Govt. of Kerala was carried out today at CSL premises, by Smt. J. Mercykutty Amma, Hon’ble Minister for Fisheries, Harbor Engineering & Cashew Industry in the presence of Senior Officials from State Fisheries Department, BPCL & Indian Register of Shipping. The Directors and Employees of CSL were also present for the ceremony. CSL Director Operations, Sri. Sureshbabu N.V explained the expansion plans of CSL (upcoming new Dry-dock within CSL premises and the new Ship-Lift facility at the premises of Intl’ Ship Repair Facility) to the Hon’ble Minister. The Hon’ble Minister appreciated the fact that the technical capabilities of CSL that is normally utilized for large size Defence & Commercial sectors is now available for the service of the domestic & local segment as well.

These Ambulance Boats have an approximate length of 22.5 Mtr, beam size of about 6.0 Mtr and a maximum speed of 14 knots. The modern vessel, designed in-house by CSL will be of high quality and fuel efficient. CFD analysis and Model Test at IIT Chennai was done to optimize fuel efficiency and firming up the power requirement. 3-D Modelling of the entire boat has been done in-house to improve ergonomics and lay-out.

The vessel will be able to accommodate Two (2) patients and will have a crew capacity of 7, including the paramedical staff. The vessel will also have various paramedical facilities like examination and nursing room, medical beds, mortuary freezer, refrigerator and medical lockers. There will be a Jason’s cradle to safely rescue people from sea. Marine ambulances will be used for the rescue and instant treatment to the marine fishermen in distress as well as for normal patrolling.

The vessels are due for delivery in early 2020. BPCL is also supporting the project as part of its CSR initiatives.

● Guidance and mentorship will be offered to learn about the market, regulatory, commercial, and technological aspects of conducting business in New Jersey;
● Introductions to potential business partners, clients, and investors; and
●Joint workshops and projects for collaboration between TiE Mumbai members and NJCU members to collaborate on developing new technologies, products and solutions.

TiE Mumbai will actively seek to educate and inform its members on New Jersey’s economy and its business eco-system, as well as the government policies and initiatives of the state with respect to various sectors of common interest and the different opportunities for business and investment available in the various technology-driven sectors of the state. Additionally, TiE Mumbai will organize webinars, discussions, and talks to enable interactions between NJCU and TiE Mumbai members.

Choose New Jersey will act as an interface between TiE Mumbai and NJCU, facilitating interactions and engagements between the two organizations. Furthermore, Choose New Jersey shall provide guidance and assistance, either in partnership with NJCU or separately, to TiE Mumbai members planning to set up business activities in India, in the matters of  business incorporation, choice or legal form, office location, government regulations and initiatives/incentives, tax planning, investment and fund-raising opportunities, among others. New Jersey is a preferred location because of its proximity to New York and offers attractive tax regime.

Global Survey Reveals Major Shift in Education Toward Do-It-Yourself Learning

81% of learners worldwide say education is poised to become more self service
  • China, India, Brazil and Hispano America are outpacing US and UK in upskilling
  • 78% of Indian learners believe that using technology to support their learning, makes it easier and more fun
 Pearson, the world’s learning company, today released the results of its Global Learner Survey, a new study capturing the voice of learners worldwide. The findings point to massive global transformation in education driven by the shifting economic landscape of the new talent economy, the vast influence of technology and perceptions that education systems are out of step with learners. The study shows that learners around the world are now taking control of their education through a “do-it-yourself” (DIY) mindset, adding to their formal education with a mix of self-teaching, short courses and online learning to keep pace with the talent economy. The survey also shows that learners are thinking beyond the traditional notions of learning, signaling a massive opportunity for education providers to reinvent learning to meet the needs of a new economy.

Pearson conducted the study with Harris Insights & Analytics to give learners in 19 countries including India, the opportunity to voice their opinions on primary, secondary and higher education; careers and the future of work; and technology. More than 11,000 people, ranging in age from 16 to 70, participated in the poll. The survey is the most comprehensive and wide ranging global public opinion survey of learners to date. In addition, Pearson released today Opportunity for Higher Education in the Era of the Talent Economy, a guide to the survey’s implications and opportunities for higher education. 

“Gig jobs, unconventional careers, tech disruption and lifelong learning have ushered in the talent economy. Now more than ever, learners understand the need for lifelong education,” said John Fallon, chief executive of Pearson. “People are meeting the demands of this new world of work by taking control of their own learning. Now, technology and innovation are giving educators, governments and companies the greatest opportunity in human history to rise to the occasion and improve lives through education.”

The Global Learner Survey’s top findings include:

  • A DIY mindset is reshaping education: People are layering on to their traditional education by mixing and matching what works and what they can afford to get trained up for the new economy. Globally, 81% of people say that learning will become more self-service as people get older. Americans, Australians and South Africans agree most strongly. When they have to retrain for work, 42% of learners in the US and 50% of learners in China and India self-taught using internet resources. When asked what learning methods they prefer when upskilling, about 80% of learners in China, the US, Australia and Europe cited professional short courses or online tools. In India, 79% believe that learning will be more self-service the older you get. India, along with China is the market where parents do not expect the educational systems to do everything for them, but actually play a large role in supplementing their children's education, whether it comes to hiring tutors, consultants or English classes to help their kids succeed or get admitted to college.

  • In the next decade digital and virtual learning will be the new normal. 80% of Americans believe that smart devices and apps will be used to help learners, with people in countries like China and Brazil even more enthusiastic about their use. Globally, 76% of people believe that college students will be taking online courses within 10 years and 67% believe more primary and secondary students will too. 70% of Americans believe that print textbooks will be obsolete in five years. Nearly 70% of people in the US, UK and Europe and 90% of people in China believe that AI will have a positive impact on education. 78% Indians believe that students today have the benefit of using technology to support their learning, which makes it easier and more fun. There is a strong belief (74%-79%) that smart devices will play a greater role in learning, virtual learning will become more common, print textbooks will become obsolete, and YouTube will become a primary learning tool.

  • Lifelong learning is not just a philosophy, it’s the new reality: Globally, there is wide agreement that people need to keep learning throughout their career to stay up-to-date in their careers. 87% of Americans embrace lifelong learning, believing that learning doesn’t stop at school. That belief rises to 96% of people in China and 94% of people in South Africa. 73% of Americans like to reinvent themselves by learning new skills, and 52% intend to “retire” the traditional concept of retirement by pursuing a second career or part time job, starting a business or taking classes. 84% of Indians end up choosing a career based on what they majored in out of which 31% ended up switching careers eventually. 76% believe that the notion of working for one employer your entire career and the idea of traditional retirement is old-fashioned 25% of Indians aspire to start their own business post retirement; followed by a second career doing something they love (20%) or a part-time job to get some sort of income (15%). 60% of Indians believe that the world is shifting to a model where people participate in education over a lifetime.

  • Confidence in education systems is wavering, especially in the US. 60% of Americans say education systems are failing the current generation. That perception is just as strong in Europe and even stronger in South Africa, Brazil and Hispano America. 67% of Americans believe college is getting more out of reach for the average student. Almost as many in the US don’t believe colleges and universities are teaching the right skills for today’s jobs. However, this does not hold true in India as a large percentage of the population (59%) believe that the education system in the country works well for the current generation and helps them keep up with the latest trends in technology and changing workforce.

  • Gen Z thinks you can be successful without a traditional college education. Despite statistics showing a higher lifetime earnings with a college degree, half of Gen Z learners in the US, UK and Australia think you can do “ok” in life without it. Globally, 68% of learners think you can do just as well with an education from a vocational or trade school. In India, 22% learners indicated that a formal education is nice, but not necessary or relevant today as one can create their own success and prosperity without it. 39% of college goers say that given a choice, they would get trade or vocational training instead of college while 15% say they would go straight to work after leaving high school.

  • China, India, Brazil and Hispano America are outpacing the US and UK in the upskilling race and defining a new global economy.  More than anywhere else in the world, people in China, Brazil, India and Hispano American believe education is driving the global economy. More than two-thirds of learners in these countries have been looking to re-skill in the past two years, compared to only 31% of Americans and 24% of British learners. Workers who do upskill are enrolling in short courses, taking courses offered by their employers or professional associations, degree programs or are self-teaching.

  • Soft skills have an advantage over automation: While STEM skills aren’t forgotten, many also realize that uniquely human skills will give them the edge over machines and that they are very hard to learn. Globally, 78% of people say they need to do more to develop soft skills like critical thinking, problem solving and creativity, while 85% of Americans and 91of Chinese believe universities need to increase their focus on teaching these skills in preparation for the job market. In India, most agree that they need to do more to develop their STEM/tech skills (76%) there is also a high percentage that says they need to do more to develop their soft skills (78%).

  • Americans also feel strongly about safety in schools and access to education: 84% of Americans say schools are less safe than 25 years ago, the highest percentage in the world and just as many say bullying (online and in person) is making school more difficult for children. Ahead of the 2020 presidential election, 71% of Americans agree that government should provide some kind of free higher education. On the heels of the college admission scandal, 72% of Americans say universities care more about their reputation than educating students.

  • Learners in the UK have their own concerns: 77% of people in the UK say social media has made the school environment more difficult for students, while less than half say it actually improves learning. 46% of those in the UK would rethink their higher education decision and get vocational training or go straight to work. More than anyone else in the world, UK learners felt higher education didn’t prepare them for their chosen career.

India scores big in WorldSkills Kazan 2019; Walchand PeopleFirst and National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) collaborate


 Walchand PeopleFirst Ltd. (WPFL) partnered with National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) to boost the performance of Indian participants for WorldSkills Competition 2019 which was held in Kazan, Russia. The Indian participants were selected based on WorldSkills India competition, an initiative by NSDC under the aegis of Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), Government of India. NSDC has been leading the country’s participation at WorldSkills International competitions since 2011.


The 45th WorldSkills Competition brought together more than 1,300 young professionals who represented 63 countries and competed in over 56 skills. Indian contingent won four medals and 15 medallions of excellence, taking India to the 13th position out of 63 countries that participated. S Aswatha Narayana from Odisha won a gold medal in water technology, Pranav Nutalapati from Karnataka won a silver medal in web technologies, Sanjoy Pramanik from West Bengal won the bronze medal in jewellery and Shweta Ratanpura from Maharashtra also won the bronze medal in graphic designing.


Gold medal winner S Aswatha Narayana said, “The overall experience of participating in WorldSkills Kazan 2019 was amazing. This journey began ten months ago with the national competition and ended with a dream-come true result. It has been a great learning experience for me. Sessions conducted by Walchand PeopleFirst made me more adaptive, helped me strategize and structure my tasks well. The domain knowledge along with the self-developing courses conducted prior to the competition helped me attain victory.”

The sessions conducted during this three-day training were basically on self-developing subjects like high-energy, self-motivation, open & supportive environment, fun & engagement and experiential learning. Over a workshop that spanned for three days, WPFL worked together towards excellence by building on skills to help the participants emerge as a winner. 10th Edition of Jagran Film Festival comes to Mumbai

The Mumbai chapter of 10th Jagran Film Festival will have premieres of films like “Sir”, “Lihaaf”, “Bad Boy Symphony”, “Satash”, “Darklight”, “Do We Belong”, “Forbidden Tikka Masala”, “#Gadhvi”, “Bhayanakam”, “The Last Elvis”, “Windows on The World”, “Daughters of Winter”, “Shit One Carries”, “Roots”, “Axing”, “Hiroshima Carp Theater”, “Ghawre Bairey Aaj”, “Breast and House” and more.
The festival started in Delhi on 18th July and has travelled through Kanpur, Lucknow, Allahabad, Varanasi, Agra, Meerut, Dehradun, Hisar, Ludhiana, Patna, Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Gorakhpur, Raipur, Indore and Bhopal. It will culminate on September 29 in Mumbai.

Viviana Mall increases its rooftop solar installation capacity



Viviana Mall, a leading retail mall in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, has increased its rooftop solar power installation by over 35% to 1,340 KVA. This means about half the common area electricity the requirement is now being met with by this renewable source of energy generation.

The solar setup at Viviana Mall now generates approximately 1.75 lakh kilowatts of clean energy each month.

In December 2016, Viviana Mall had installed 900 KVA rooftop solar power plant at their premises. This made Viviana Mall the first retail premises to have such a vast rooftop solar installation generating 100,000 kilowatts per month.

The decision to increase the capacity was taken after the mall’s management realized the benefits accruing from generating power through renewable energy.

Now, after having covered about 50% of common area power a requirement, the mall's management is looking forward to covering maximum electricity consumption through green energy.

Post this rooftop solar plant installation, the power bills for Viviana Mall have reduced substantially as well.

Secondly, during power cuts, reliance on diesel-generator sets have also reduced drastically. Thus, it also reduces reliance on fossil fuels (diesel) to a considerable amount.

On augmenting of the installed solar capacity, Manor K Agarwal, CEO, Viviana Mall said, "As a role model for sustainable progress, the Viviana Mall is well on course towards achieving its goal of maximizing the generation of its power requirements through renewable or clean energy sources. Renewable energy has significant environmental benefits making it the single biggest driver to help us meet our carbon emission reduction targets in our fight against climate change. With India being a growing economy, power consumption is only going to rise. The adoption of alternative sources of energy is the ideal way to manage the balance between economic growth and a sustainable environment.”

Viviana Mall has been taking up various environmentally responsible initiatives in the past and installation of rooftop solar power is one such initiative in the same direction.

It is well known that Earth will run out of natural resources if power generation solely relies upon thermal-based electricity production, which also contributes to air pollution. Hence, measures are being undertaken by bringing in renewable energy.

Even the government has set a target of 175 GW of renewable energy to be installed by 2022. Of this target, the government wants to have 100 GW of solar and 60 GW of wind energy and rest from other clean energy sources. Recently, the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis, in its report had mentioned that India needs faster implementation of rooftop solar to meet India’s 175 GW renewable energy target.

“Having covered 60% of Viviana Mall’s energy requirement, we are moving in the right direction to contribute to meeting India’s renewable energy target in our own way through this initiative. With this measure, Viviana Mall is also leading the way in environmentally friendly operational the model that a retail establishment can have,” said Agarwal.

Rooftop solar not only offer an economical and clean an alternative to conventional energy sources but also delivers reliability in power supply.

First-Of-Its-Kind Paediatric ART Center Established At Bai Jerbai Wadia Hospital For Treatment Of Children With HIV


 ~The number of kids suffering from HIV has gone down, but there are a lot of children who still go undiagnosed~
 
~ Free HIV medicines will be available for all HIV infected children at the ART center~
 
Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a virus that tends to breaks down certain cells in your immune system (your body's defense against diseases that helps you stay healthy). The causes can be attributed to blood transfusion, sexual abuse, and also children can acquire from parent. Due to the lack of treatment, one with HIV is likely to suffer from Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). Currently, there is no cure for HIV, but with the help of antiretroviral therapy is can be well-managed. To end the HIV epidemic, Bai Jerbai Wadia Hospital for Children has come up with a unique public private partnership (PPP) model of Paediatric ART center in association with NACO which was inaugurated by Dr Srikala Acharya of Mumbai District AIDS Control Society.
 
Dr Ira Shah, a leading paediatric infectious diseases specialist who has been looking after HIV infected children, since 2001 will be heading the Paediatric ART center. “With the establishment of the Paediatric ART center at B J Wadia Hospital for Children in Mumbai, children with HIV can get a holistic paediatric treatment under one roof with the help of a team of experts. Earlier, around 1.5% infants in Mumbai would get HIV from their mother. But now the percentage is lesser than that.” Wadia Hospital sees several newly diagnosed HIV paediatric patients every month. In addition, it sees follow up patients in the oldest Pediatric HIV OPD in the city of Mumbai at Wadia Children Hospital. 
 
She added, “At the moment, the number of kids with HIV has decreased due to preventive programme. But they are still a lot of children who are undiagnosed. 

Hence, paediatric patients with HIV and associated infections will get a free HIV medicines - as well as complete Paediatric services for managing opportunistic infections and it’s comorbidities as Wadia hospital has all the facilities related to paediatric care,” highlighted Dr Ira Shah, paediatric infectious diseases specialist, B J Wadia Hospital for Children 
Dr Minnie Bodhanwala, CEO, Wadia Hospitals said, “The Paediatric and Perinatal HIV clinic at B J Wadia Hospital for Children is the first paediatric HIV service in the city of Mumbai that was started in 1996. Till date, the clinic has treated more than 900 HIV infected children and has prevented HIV in over 1400 babies born to HIV infected mothers. With the help of NACO and MDACS, now free ART will be available to all HIV infected children as part of PPP Paediatric ART center at B J Wadia Hospital for Children.”
 
She added,  “Even before prevention of parent to child transmission (PPTCT) of HIV was available in the country, B J Wadia Hospital for children was offering the PPTCT programme and had brought down the transmission rate from 40% to <2 and="" constant="" field="" from="" guidelines="" has="" helped="" hiv.="" hiv="" in="" institute="" of="" patients.="" research="" span="" the="" these="" this="" updates="" various="">
