The 10 films this year are an exciting celebration of India’s cultural diversity. This includes languages like Pahari, Maithili, Assamese, Nepali, Hindustani, and Bengali. The 21st edition of the festival also marks the return of a host of creators from the Jio MAMI with Star family. Bhaskar Hazarika, who's film The River of Fables (Kothanodi) also screened at the festival in 2015 is back with his new film, Ravening (Aamis) which will have its Asia Premiere at the section (the film had its World Premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year).  Archana Atul Phadke’s Marathi documentary, About Love will be premiering this year (after winning the best film award for her short film, Sagar Setu in Dimensions Mumbai, 2009) along with Prateek Vats' Eeb Allay Ooo! (A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings premiered at Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival with Star, 2017).

Jio MAMI with Star will world premiere three films out of the 10 in competition - Pushpendra Singh’s Pearl of the Desert (Maru ro Moti), Achal Mishra’s Gamak Ghar and Saurav Rai’s Invitation (Nimtoh) along with 6 India premieres - Gitanjali Rao’s Bombay Rose and Kislay’s Just Liked That (Aise Hi) among others.

Archana Atul Phadke’s short film Uski Baarish was showcased at TIFF Kids International Film Festival, Seattle International Film Festival among 34 other reputed film festivals. Saurav Rai’s short film, Gudh was screened at the Cannes Film Festival in the Cinéfondation selection. Gitanjali Rao’s Bombay Rose just world premiered at Venice Film Festival (Critics’ Week) and has screened at Toronto International Film Festival. The India Gold selection, like each year, has some of the most dynamic and versatile directors who have won accolades for their exceptional storytelling.

Last year, Jio MAMI with Star premiered some great titles like Ridham Janve’s The Gold-Laden Sheep and The Sacred Mountain, Aadish Keluskar’s Jaoon Kahan Bata Ae Dil, Vinit Chandrasekharan’s Buddha, Ivan Ayr’s Soni and Dominic Sangma’s MA•AMA.

Speaking about the line-up this year, Smriti Kiran, Artistic Director, MAMI said, “India Gold is at the heart of our selection. We are an International film festival but bringing the best Indian narratives to the world and to India is at the core of our mission. Festivals from across the world have now begun to look at us as the gateway to credible Indian cinema and we take that responsibility very seriously. I am happy we are able to take the narrative forward for our storytellers a notch higher every year.”

Director of About Love, Archana Atul Phadke commented, “It was at Dimensions Mumbai 2009, where my first short film, Sagar Setu had played and won the best film award. It was the same year that my producer, editor and best friend’s film, Udaan won the Jury award. Year and again, we would apply to the festival and come back with our films. Four years after our last film Placebo, we are very excited to bring the story of home, with About Love, to my hometown at MAMI 2019".

Achal Mishra, Director, Gamak Ghar said, “It feels unreal. I have been attending MAMI for the last three years. Sitting there in the dark, watching and learning from some of the best films from around the world, I couldn’t have imagined my own film playing on the big screen to such an avid audience. It’s an honour to be invited to premiere my debut film in the India Gold section!”

The India Gold films will be watched by a Jury of esteemed film personalities from around the world. The Jio MAMI 21st Mumbai Film Festival with Star will take place from the 17th to 24th October, 2019.

The store, located in Bandra is on Waterfield road and in close proximity to Linking road and China gate restaurant, has been designed with heart and soul, to be an oasis for those who love handmade, craft driven textiles.

“We are extremely excited to launch our first store in Mumbai. It took us a long time to find a space that we could make ours. Our search led us to this location in Bandra, reminiscent of old-world architecture and a hub of trendy alternative culture. One look and we knew we were ready to set foot in Mumbai.” says, David Housego, Chairman, Shades of India.

“I wanted a minimalist space that allowed bringing out the beauty of colour, texture and detailing. Our store in Mumbai has contemporary interiors with high ceilings, large glass French windows overlooking the adjacent zen garden. Our apparel, home and accessories collections are also all about contemporary design and inspiring workmanship of traditional craft,” adds Mandeep Nagi, Design Director, at Shades of India.

Shades of India launches four collections each year, as an ode to the changing seasons, drawing inspiration from liberated and graceful feminine strength. Each collection is distinguished by the fine quality of the fabric and the detailing of the hand worked embroidery, championing the textile crafts of India.

Mandeep Nagi – Design Director, Shades of India
For Mandeep Nagi, Design Director, at Shades of India, textiles have been a passion since
childhood. “I remember stealing into my mother's room,” she says “and taking out her beautiful
old saris. I fondled them, gazed at the colours and patterns, and marveled at the touch and colours. It was a very formative experience.”

Formative as well were her early years at Shades of India when she got a chance to travel to all
the textile centres across India. She worked with women's groups in Banas Kantha on
embroideries, travelled through Gujarat and Kutch studying different techniques, and spent time in Lucknow and Rampur on developing Chikan embroideries and khadi fabrics from West Bengal.
Later she had the chance to travel a lot to Europe and the US where Shades of India regularly
participated in Trade Fairs such as Maison et Objet in Paris and the New York Gift show. “I
admired designers who had absorbed diverse influences - like Jean-Paul Gautier who combined
black stockings with vintage costume’, she says.

It was out of this background that Mandeep's own design sense evolved. She loves opposites –
fine traditional artisanship interpreted with a minimalist western sensibility: masculine and
feminine: a surprising contrast of colours such as mixing orange with blue or red with a limp grey.
“I start any collection by deciding on colours. Colours are the first thing that set a mood for a new collection,” she says.

Mandeep feels that with her experience of more than 20 years in designing textiles she can easily
imagine a product, whether clothes or home textiles even before it is constructed “If I close my
eyes in two minutes I will know how a new piece of textile will look. The whole journey from
imagination to actual is what excites me”

As creative head of the Company, Mandeep is responsible for designing four collections of apparel a year, accessories to accompany them and two collections for the home. ‘We are a textile brand’, she says, ‘in which I seek to convey a unity of style.’ She has also designed the interiors of the new Mumbai shop in Bandra West with an emphasis on minimalism, clear lines and a sense of peace and space. She has won several design awards both in India and in Paris and New York. She is a
Graduate and has a Diploma from YWCA and NIFT Delhi. She finds inspiration from exchanges with the academic world in textiles and many young textile graduates. She is married to David Housego, Chairman of the Company. They have a daughter, Meher, aged 11, who also has a passion for textiles.

Shades of India is internationally known as one of India’s most creative textile companies. Led by Mandeep Nagi (Design Director) and David Housego (former UK journalist), the brand combines
contemporary design with the inspiring workmanship of traditional craft. The uniqueness of its style lies in the texturing of fabrics, the coordination and contrasting of colors, and the inventive,
unexpected use of surface treatment.

The company is acclaimed internationally for originality and inventiveness of its designs and has won various awards at major international trade shows including the best product awards at shows in Paris and New York. Mandeep Nagi, Design Director, has thrice won the Elle Decor Design Award in India for fabric.

Shades of India is a lifestyle brand that includes apparel, textile jewelry and bags, and soft furnishings for the home. Under Mandeep Nagi, it brings out new ranges each year for spring, summer and for the pre-festive and festive seasons. Each has a different story behind it but each is marked by the charm of the unexpected, by the use of fine fabrics, by a feeling for silhouettes that fit the season and by an eye for hand work and detailing. The clothes are contemporary and appeal to women who value the unusual, are confident in what they wear and independent minded.

Building on its international reputation, it established its own first stand-alone, life style store in the Meharchand Market in New Delhi in 2012. It has already become an iconic shopping destination – described as a ‘must’ visit in Delhi by the New York Times. It added 18 months ago a second store in Gurgaon and will be opening a third store in Bandra West (Mumbai) in June. In addition, it has shop-in- shops in the main metropoles.

Shades of India has its own design studio, sampling facilities and factory in Noida (NCR).The company can draw on huge archives of fabrics, techniques and designs. #Water for Life Campaign Draws Attention to Alarming Water Situation in India

India’s First Video Based Research Report on Water Related Issues, Findings and Solutions

Ground water contaminations, excessive use of groundwater and pollution - main causes depleting water levels leading to an impending crisis

final info - cycleIndia is facing its worst water crisis and its estimated that 21 Indian cities will run out of groundwater by 2020, says a recent report from the NITI Aayog. Nearly 600 million Indians are facing high-to-extreme water stress. More than 40% of the annually available surface water is used every year and according to the report more than 200,000 people are losing lives every year due to inadequate access to safe water. The situation is likely to worsen as the demand for water will exceed the supply by 2050.

Many Indian states, including Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Tamil Nadu, face acute water shortages, exacerbated by changing rainfall patterns. Sharda University campaign “#WaterForLife” recently concluded its findings after a 60 day’s journey traversing 8,000 kms across 12 states. Philem Rohan Singh a student from Sharda University led the initiative, as he cycled from Kashmir till Kanyakumari meeting people, gathering statistics and discussing solutions at ground level with the people who are affected by this situation in a day to day life.

As per the findings from the campaign many cities in Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh and Rajasthan are facing major water crisis. These include towns and establishments near tourist places, as a large number of hotels and accommodations are increasing the demand for water. This is leading to depletion of groundwater at a faster rate than before. Leading to scarcity of clean water and giving rise to demand for potable water which they have to source at higher price.

While taking about the journey Mr Prashant Gupta, Executive Director, Sharda University said “We are facing a massive water crisis despite having considerable rainfall, huge perennial glaciers, rivers as well as a large number of lake and water bodies. Parts of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra, for instance, have seen a significant shortfall in rainfall over the last decade compared to historical averages. At the national level, the government is trying to implement solutions like pushing farmers towards micro-irrigation and more efficient water use as part of its ‘per drop per more crop’ campaign to conserve groundwater. I feel water availability is not the problem, it’s the management of this supply and as cities proliferate, there will be a need for sustainable infrastructure and solutions in order to resolve the alarming crisis.”

This is a small effort on our part to bring people together, to collaborate and share their best practices and ideas on how we as individuals can play a role towards water conservation and management”. he further added

The campaign was led by Mr Prashant Gupta, Executive Director of Sharda University along with the team from the Mass Communication Department which includes Dr Amit Chawla, Mr. Gaurav Parashar and others. The campaign was flagged off on 14th June from Srinagar and successfully culminated in Kanyakumari. The team visited remote locations across Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Bangalore and Kerala.

The findings of the campaign will be presented in the form of a documentary by the end of September 2019 which will be India’s first Video based research report on Water related issues, findings and solutions to be shared with the Government of India.

While travelling from Srinagar to Kanyakumari the team faced various challenges, the extreme weather condition was the biggest challenge for shooting and travelling. Areas in the Indian Himalayan range were extremely cold, and the team also had to face heavy rainfall while travelling in coastal areas.

MUMBAI POLICE SUPPORTED BY VODAFONE IDEA TO MAKE GANESH VISARJAN SAFER

To use drones at Juhu, Girgaon & Ashish Talao for air patrolling at these prominent key Ganesh visarjan locations

Vodafone enabled drones to provide live feed in Police CCTV monitoring room
More than 15 lakh devotees expected at these locations during Ganesh visarjan
Mumbai Police has been supported by Vodafone Idea Limited, India’s leading telecom operator to enable drone surveillance at crucial Ganesh visarjan locations across the city on 6 Sep (5th day), 7 Sep (6th day), 12 Sep (11th day) and 13 Sep (12th day).

The drones are doing aerial patrolling at three prominent visarjan locations in Mumbai - Juhu Chowpatty, Girgaon Chowpatty and Ashish Talao Chembur where over 15 lakh devotees are expected to attend the visarjan festivities. These drones are equipped with high definition video cameras, and the video feed generated will be live-streamed to the Mumbai Police’s state-of-the-art control room using Vodafone’s seamless 4G network.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Sunil Tolani, Business Head – Mumbai, Vodafone Idea Limited said, “Ganesh Chaturthi is the biggest festival that Mumbai celebrates. Being headquartered here, it is our duty and privilege to support Mumbai Police in their relentless efforts to keep the city safe and secure. We are using Vodafone’s seamless 4G network across the city to provide live feeds from airborne drones to Mumbai Police’s control room for enhanced security.  With this, we hope that Mumbaikars will enjoy a safer and happier visarjan.”

Speaking on this event the spokesperson from Mumbai police said, “Mumbai Police appreciates the support provided by Vodafone Idea and looks forward to such associations in the future.”

Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the most awaited festivals and is marked with the installation of the deity's idol at home and at elaborate pandals. Each year, visarjans draw heavy crowds and while there is enough arrangement to ensure smooth functioning, it is not always possible to keep an eagle-eye on all the idols, especially at large visarjan points such as beaches.
