TRRAIN Retail Inclusion Summit-Only 36% of India's persons with disability are employed 90% in the unorganised sector

Trust for Retailers & Retail Associates of India (TRRAIN), in association with HSBC, today announced the release of their report on disability employment titled ‘Disability Employment: Indian Retail Changing Equations’. This report makes a strong case for the retail industry to be the flag bearer of employment for PwDs. It was released during the 3rd edition of its Retail Inclusion Summit aimed at driving an impetus towards making India's corporates more diverse and inclusive.

The summit was attended by BS Nagesh, Founder, TRRAIN, Surendra Rosha, CEO, HSBC, Neville Noronha, CEO, D Mart, Sadashiv Nayak, Business Head, Big Bazaar, and Piyush Dutt, CHRO, Vishal Mega Mart amongst others.

According to the India census 2011, the number of Persons with Disabilities (PwD) in India is 26.8 million or 2.21% of the total population. The report brings to light some startling statistics pertaining to the PwD population in India.
•        It states that the actual number of PwD in India is between 5-10% of the total population, as against the 2.21% put forth in the 2011 census
•        Interestingly, around 50% of PwD population in India is in the employable age group (20-59 years). However, lack of education is a hindrance to employability as around 46% of the PwD population in India is uneducated
•        While 36% of India’s PwD are employed, they are mostly (around 90%) employed in the unorganized sector
•        Furthermore, the report finds that mainstreaming PwD can add around 5-7% to India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP)
•        It is encouraging that hiring of PwD in the retail sector has gone up by 53% between 2011-18. However, there is enhanced scope for the retail industry in India to employ and mainstream PwD as the report establishes a positive correlation between customers and stores manned by PWD

Given that around 80% of jobs in the retail sector are customer facing, employing PwD serves the dual purpose of:
•        Providing employment to them
•        Sensitising the larger society about the challenges faced by PwD

Importantly, it underscores how PwD can contribute to economic growth as well as societal development if provided the right opportunities. With this in mind, the ‘Disability Employment: Indian Retail Changing Equations’ report provides a consolidated list of strategies and recommendations for the government and retail companies to train and employ persons with disabilities.

“We know that ‘inclusive development’ and accessibility is a genuine challenge. 64% of the persons with disability are unemployed, as compared to an average 9% unemployment rate for the rest of the population,” said BS Nagesh, Founder TRRAIN, offering perspective on the challenge at hand. TRRAIN runs an initiative titled PANKH, which aims to train people with disabilities and provide them with employment opportunities in the retail industry.

Commenting on the report, Surendra Rosha, CEO, HSBC, said, “Since 2016, we have supported 13 organisations working with PwDs that have trained over 1,800 youth and placed 1,130 of them. However, we will not stop here. Our partners have highlighted the need for an ecosystem building approach and have conveyed the urgency of investing in data, insights and frameworks that will enable a greater number of employers to hire PwD’s. The partnership with TRRAIN, a leading organisation in skilling PwD’s in the retail sector, is, therefore, an important one. With this report, it is our endeavour to bring skills development and placements for PwDs to the forefront of the employability agenda.”

The day-long programme had an opening plenary featuring BS Nagesh as moderator for a session with Surendra Rosha and Sadashiv Nayak on why service sector must bring inclusion in the workplace.

“1 in 15 persons have a disability. So when we create employment we are actually touching 15 households and telling them be carefree. We are creating consumption from 7% of the population and making the brand feel good which is a win-win situation. PwDs have done well in the customer facing as well as the back end jobs,” said Sadashiv Nayak, Business Head, Big Bazaar.

Topics such as cultivating inclusion into a company’s culture, women in retail workforce and technology as an enabler for inclusion were discussed through the day.

“The Retail Inclusion Summit organised by TRRAIN has done a fantastic job so far in building a high level of awareness around inclusion and having the corporate sector engaged and involved. It’s time to take the game to the next level, where instead of just reaching out to include people we enable them with special abilities. Organisations must focus on PwD’s ability, attitude and output,” said Jamshed Daboo, MD, Trent Hypermarket Pvt. Ltd.

The launch of India’s first quiet hour- an initiative started globally for shoppers on the autism spectrum who struggle due to music and noise, was overseen by Vineet Saraiwala, Inclusion Lead at Big Bazaar and Sonali Saini, SOL’s Arc.

Other attendees included names such as Ameesha Prabhu, CEO, TRRAIN, Nancy Desai , Director Finance & Livelihood Programs, TRRAIN, Clement Chauvet, Chief, Skill and Business Development , UNDP  India, Maneesha Chadha,Head – CSR & Philanthropic Initiatives, JP Morgan India, Bani Khurana, HRBP Reliance Digital & Head D&I Initiatives, Sriram Shankar, Head India Enterprises Business, Goodera, Richa Bansal, Founder & CEO, Saarathee CRM Pvt Ltd., Dipesh Sutariya, Co-Founder, Enable India, Shishir Gorle, Founder, Square Meal Foods ,  B Venkatramana, Group President, Landmark Group, Ranjan Chakraborty, COO, Director Operation, Square Meal Foods,  Chitra Padmanabhan, Head HR Reliance Digital and James Raphael, Executive Head, RASCI.

CHEF SANJEEV KAPOOR TO HOST COOKING DEMONSTRATION AND LAUNCH BEHAVIOUR CHANGE CAMPAIGN AROUND CLEAN COOKIN IN INDIA

The Clean Cooking Alliance along with Tata Trusts and other partners is going to kick-off its pilot project of Alliance’s behavior change campaign at the Taj Land’s End Hotel, Mumbai on January 31st, 2019 from 03:30- 05:00 pm. The event will begin with a cooking demonstration using clean cooking solutions by Celebrity Chef Mr. Sanjeev Kapoor. The event will not only feature a Q&A between Chef Sanjeev Kapoor and Alliance CEO Dymphna van der Lans, will also mark the launch of the Alliance’s behavior change campaigns in Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat for the next six months, this campaign will promote the adoption of clean cook-stoves among the rural population and convince them to stop using traditional cook-stoves (Mitti Ka Chulha).

Over 789 million people in India comprising nearly 60 percent of the population depend on polluting, open fires or inefficient stoves to cook their food, harming health, the climate, and environment. The exposure to household air pollution from cooking is a leading risk factor for various diseases, especially amongst pregnant women and children.

This urgent need to tackle the deadly effects of household air pollution brings together Master Chef Sanjeev Kapoor, Infosys Co-founder Narayan Murthy, Clean Cooking Alliance CEO Dymphna van der Lans and other prominent leaders to raise awareness about the impacts of cooking over polluting open fires and inefficient stoves. These leaders aim to highlight the stark reality that household air pollution from cooking and heating contributes to the deaths of nearly half a million Indians every year, and disproportionately affects women and girls.
The Alliance  and Tata Trusts through their pilot projects in UP and Gujarat, aim to address millions of Indian women and their families, who are suffering from multiple health and lifestyle issues because of cooking over polluting, open fires or inefficient stoves. This behavior change program will encourage people shift to clean cooking solutions that are cleaner and equipped with more modern stoves and fuels to reduce pollution and health hazards.

During the event, Chef Sanjeev Kapoor will also discuss with other participants how the Alliance, the India Leadership Council, and clean cooking businesses are trying to bring greater investment into this sector. He will also facilitate a demonstration of the clean cooking technologies promoted by various companies and organizations to spread the message that clean cooking must be accessible to all.
Sanjeev Kapoor, Master Chef says “This has been a great opportunity for me to exercise my social responsibilities and raise awareness about the harmful health, climate, environment, and gender impacts of cooking over polluting open fires and inefficient stoves. As a culinary expert and renowned chef, it becomes my responsibility to inspire millions of Indians and help CCA in creating a healthy and sustainable environment by opting for clean cooking devices”.
Narayan Murthy Co-founder of Infosys says “my siblings and I have watched our mother cooking breakfast, lunch and dinner using woodstove and the poor lady had to work very hard. If country like India has to redeem the dreams of Mahatma Gandhi, then India has to work on health, education, nutrition and clean energy including for cooking".
About the Clean Cooking AllianceThe Clean Cooking Alliance works with a global network of partners to build an industry that makes clean cooking accessible to families around the world. Established in 2010, the Alliance supports the development, sale, distribution, and consistent use of clean cooking solutions that transform lives by improving health, protecting the environment, creating jobs, and helping consumers save time and money. The Alliance working on grassroots level with grants and investments from governments, corporations, foundations, civil society, investors, and individuals is guided by a Leadership Council and supported by a full-time professional staff. The Alliance works on core pillars of - Driving consumer demand for cleaner, more modern cookstoves and fuels by supporting behavior change and awareness raising interventions; Building a pipeline of investible businesses capable of answering this demand with affordable, high-quality, appropriate clean cooking products; Improving the policy environment by providing trusted, relevant data and advocating for regulations and policies that allow the industry to thrive; and Increasing investment community participation and global engagement by providing market intelligence, delivering a clear path to action, and continuing to serve as the convener of the clean cooking sector.

Benefits of clean cooking - Clean cooking transforms lives by improving health, protecting the climate and environment, and helping families save time and money.
