“Like Singapore, Mumbai should try and become self sufficient in water”, said Mr Suresh Prabhu, former minister in Government of India. Speaking at the concluding session of the Mumbai Water Conclave organised by Mumbai First to mark the World Water Day, Mr Prabhu said that increasing demands for water from the surrounding areas from where the water is sourced and increasing urbanisation has the potential to create a conflict and that cities like Mumbai should prepare in advance for it.

The day long conclave deliberated issues such are the need for Mumbai to conserve water, approaches to conserve and recycle water, technologies available to do so and the actual experience on the ground by the ones who are making it happen in reality. There were also suggestions with regard to right pricing of water so as it act as a disincentive against wasting it. Creating a market for waste water for non potable purposes was another suggestion that came out of the Conclave.

Mumbai first also signed two MOUs on this occasion with NAREDCO and CREDAI to collaborate in implementing the new ideas in MMR region.

Conclave was attended by experts in the areas of water conservation from the World Bank, Water Resources Authority of Maharashtra, Netherlands Government, MCGM, MMRDA, Gates Foundation and NGOs.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Narinder Nayar, Chairman, Mumbai First urged upon all stakeholders to come together to help Mumbai become and example in water management.

Thank you for shedding light on such an important topic! Your blog post advocating for Mumbai to strive towards self-sustainability resonates deeply with me. As one of the most populous cities in the world, it's crucial for Mumbai to explore ways to reduce its dependency on external resources and foster a more sustainable future. Your insightful analysis of the challenges and opportunities facing the city, from water scarcity to waste management, underscores the urgent need for action. I appreciate the practical suggestions you've offered, such as promoting rooftop gardens and renewable energy initiatives, as viable steps towards achieving self-sufficiency. By encouraging local communities, businesses, and policymakers to collaborate on sustainable solutions, Mumbai can pave the way for other urban centers to follow suit. Thank you for sparking this important conversation—I'm inspired to join the movement towards a more self-sustainable Mumbai!
