Mumbai, May 12, 2026

The Office of the Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Mumbai, organised a Mega Outreach Programme today to create awareness about the Income Tax Act, 2025, which came into effect from April 1, 2026. The new legislation replaces the Income Tax Act, 1961 and aims to provide a simpler, more transparent and taxpayer-friendly system aligned with the changing digital economy and the vision of an Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

The programme was conducted under Prarambh 2026, a nationwide initiative of the Income Tax Department to help taxpayers and stakeholders understand the provisions of the new law and ensure a smooth transition from the earlier framework. More than 700 participants attended the event, including Chartered Accountants, representatives of trade and industry bodies, taxpayers, tax professionals and senior corporate executives.

Among the prominent participants were Niranjan Hiranandani, Managing Director of Hiranandani Group; Raamdeo Agrawal, Chairman of Motilal Oswal Group; Arjun Kapoor; and Shri C.S. Nanda, former President of ICAI.

Speaking on the occasion, Shri Alok Kumar, Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Mumbai, said that the new Act has been designed to make tax laws easier to understand and compliance more convenient for taxpayers. He stated that decades of amendments and complex provisions had made the earlier framework difficult for ordinary taxpayers to navigate and that the new law seeks to simplify compliance through a modern and digitally enabled structure. He added that awareness programmes are being organised across Mumbai to assist taxpayers during the transition period.

Shri Niranjan Hiranandani said the new Income Tax framework would promote transparency, simplify compliance by removing multiple complex provisions, and strengthen trust between citizens and the government. He added that the growth oriented and digitally transparent tax system would support investment, improve ease of doing business and living, and contribute to India’s economic prosperity and the vision of an Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

Arjun Kapoor thanked the Income Tax Department for undertaking initiatives to simplify tax related processes and awareness for citizens. He said that the new framework and digitally connected systems would make it easier for people to understand and address tax related issues more efficiently than before.

C.S. Nanda, former President of ICAI, said that the new Act would facilitate greater integration of AI in the tax system and significantly reduce litigation. He added that the Department’s objective is to ensure that the benefits of the new framework reach even the last taxpayer in the country.

Officials of the Department made detailed presentations on important aspects of the new Act, including simplified provisions, revised structure and measures aimed at reducing compliance requirements. During the programme, two taxpayer facilitation initiatives — Kar Setu, an informational FAQ booklet, and Kar Saathi, an AI based chatbot providing round-the-clock assistance were also introduced.

An interactive session was held during which participants raised queries related to return filing, tax payments and implementation of the new Act. A street play based on the new law was also presented to spread awareness among the public in a simple and engaging manner.
