Epic – the leader in Health IT and electronic health records is collaborating with Donate Life America

Today is National Organ Donation Day – and two giants in U.S. healthcare are excited to share a collaboration that is going to save lives.  Epic – the developer of MyChart (the electronic health record platform used by millions of Americans) – and Donate Life America are collaborating to allow MyChart users to register as organ, eye, and tissue donors directly through their patient portal, streamlining the donation process, helping the more than 100,000 people in the U.S. currently awaiting an organ for transplant. Developed as a collaboration between Donate Life America and Epic, this new functionality directly connects users to the National Donate Life Registry, allowing them to sign up as a donor for transplant, research, or education purposes. The software has been developed and will be going live at healthcare systems all across the country starting in the spring.

Epic – the leader in Health IT and electronic health records is collaborating with Donate Life America – developing the technology that will allow the 120 million American’s that use MyChart to sign up for Donate Life America’s Organ Donation Registry.

From Epic’s LinkedIn announcement this morning:

More than 100,000 people in the US are waiting for a life-saving organ transplant, and there aren’t enough donors to meet those needs. Each day, 16 people die waiting for a transplant.

Through a joint effort with Donate Life America, patients will be able to easily register as organ, eye, and tissue donors through MyChart, as well as choose whether to donate for research and education in addition to transplant purposes. Each organ donor can save up to 8 lives and enhance many more, and registering to be a donor is a great way to express your wishes and commitment to organ donation.

This feature will be available in the coming months. If you’re an Epic community member, you can reach out to your Epic representative to learn more.
