The World Post Day marks the Anniversary of the establishment of Universal Postal Union, and is celebrated on 09th October every year. This year UPU is celebrating 150 years of its establishment with the theme ‘ 150 years of Enabling Communication and Empowering peoples across Nations”. Department of Posts is celebrating National Postal Week 2024 from 07th October, 2024 to 11th October, 2024.
India Post, a vital part of the country's communication and logistics infrastructure, has undergone significant changes over time. From its inception in 1854 during British rule to its
present role as a multifaceted postal, financial, and retail service provider, India Post has adapted to the evolving needs of the nation. This year India Post celebrates 170 years.
The Department of Posts, India strives to provide inclusive customer-centric services, promoting financial literacy, philately and social responsibility.
Customer-Centric Initiatives
1. Door-to-Door Delivery: Ensuring timely delivery of mail and parcels to citizens with special focus on timelines.
2. Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSK): Acceptance of passport applications at 42 POPSKs.
3. Aadhaar Enrollment and Updation: Providing Aadhaar services at 1287 Post offices
4. Banking Services: Offering savings accounts, fixed deposits etc with best interest rates for the poorest.
5. Common Service Centre’s (CSC): 15,169 Post offices function as CSCs
Financial Inclusion and Life Insurance
1. Postal Savings Schemes: Promoting POSB, SSA, and other savings schemes.
Maharashtra circle has to its credit 2.76 crore of Live Accounts and 6.16 lakhs accounts of Mahila Samman Saving Certificate Scheme accounts.
2. Postal Life Insurance (PLI) and Rural Postal Life Insurance (RPLI): Providing insurance coverage.
Maharashtra Postal circle has procured 31,007 policies with premium of 97.34 Cr in PLI & 46,272 policies with premium of 22.59 cr. in Rural PLI during the current financial year.
3. Promoting of Jansuraksha Schemes : Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojna(PMJJBY), Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojna(PMSBY), Atal Pension Yojna(APY)
Parcel and Logistics
1. Speedpost Parcel Services: Ensuring fast delivery of parcels.
2. Business Parcel Services: Catering to business needs.
3. Logistics Solutions: Partnering with e-commerce companies.
Digital Initiatives
1. Postinfo App: Tracking mail and parcels.
2. Electronic Money Order (eMO): Digital money transfer.
3. Online Bill Payments: Facilitating bill payments, India Post Payment Bank, Dak Pay
4. QR code-based payment facility in post offices
Rural Outreach
1. Rural Postal Services: Providing postal services in rural areas.
2. Antyodaya Diwas: Reaching out to marginalized communities through Dak Choupals
3. Gramin Dak Sevaks (GDS): Employing local youth.
Philately
1. Philately Deposit Accounts : Currently 10,535 accounts are standing in the circle
2. Philatelic Exhibitions: Showcasing rare stamps and postal materials.
3. Special Covers, Customised My Stamps: 40 Special Covers and 10 Customized My Stamp are
released in the current year.
3. Philatelic Seminars and Workshops for promoting philately.
Dak Niryat Kendras (DNKs) aims to :-
1. Enhance export competitiveness.
2. Support MSMEs and entrepreneurs.
3. Streamline export processes
4. Promote India’s exports globally
80 DNKs are functional in the circle and 80 more are in the pipeline for rollout.
Department of Posts, IT Modernization Project 2.0 has been approved by the Government with an outlay of Rs. 5785 Crores. The same is under implementation. IT Modernization Project aims at consolidating the technological gains made by the IT Modernization project 2012, undertake opportunities for technological transitions and technology refresh, creating a platform to meet futuristic business and technological requirement through enhanced integration between the internal business units and external entities and also to use technology as a mean to achieve the ultimate goal of efficient service delivery.
The “Har Ghar Tiranga 3.0” campaign in Maharashtra has been a significant success, with 17.52 lakh national flags sold through post offices, generating a revenue of ₹4.38 crore.
Road Transport Network (RTN): dedicated trucks are plying for fast parcel transmission on 68 routes across India. In Maharashtra, 3 Inter Circle and 9 intra Circle RTNs are operated.
Smart Parcel Delivery Kiosks (SPDKs) : 10 Kiosks are installed in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai area to allow recipients to collect parcels at their convenience. Under this service customer can request for depositing his/her Parcel in SPDK and collect the parcel as per his convenient time.
Digital Postal Index Number (DIGIPIN) :Department has started Geofencing of Pincode boundary area for ensuring simplified addressing solutions for citizens. In this regard, DIGIPIN has been developed to bridge the crucial gap between physical locations and their digital representation.
Capacity Building : Hon’ble MoSC launched “Dak Karmayogi” and “iGOT Karmayogi” e-Learning Web Portal for enhancing skill of all Departmental employees/GDS. Total 42483 Departmental employees and GDS of Maharashtra Circle have been enrolled on the Dak Karmayogi Portal. 6,09,550 courses have been enrolled by the employees/GDS of Maharashtra Circle out of which 4,85,867 courses have been completed. Considering the achievements across various parameters pertaining to Mission Karmayogi, Maharashtra Circle secured 2nd place all over India and felicitated by Hon’ble MoSC for exemplary implementation of the Mission Karmayogi Project.
Brief of Maharashtra Circle
Maharashtra Circle consists of two States i.e. Maharashtra and Goa. There are 6 regions, 43 Postal and 7 RMS Divisions. With the wide network of post offices viz. 61 Head Post offices, 2,160 Sub Post offices and 11,816 Branch Post offices (829 in LWE areas), distributed across rural areas of Maharashtra and Goa, the Department is able to provide banking and delivery services with a total of 22,328 Departmental Staff and 20,155 Gramin Dak Sevaks.
Since the last five years, Maharashtra Circle has recruited 5,976 Postal Assistants, 6,950 Postmen /Mail guards and 5,761 Multi-Tasking staff. Besides, 11,589 Gramin Dak Sevaks (GDS) have been engaged in Branch Post offices in rural areas. During the current year, 3,170 has been notified for recruitment of GDS. The process for engagement in under progress.
Department of Posts has launched Darpan 2.0 Android mobile App for providing faster and safer Postal services to customers in remote areas. Under this mega launch project, old RICT devices have been replaced by supply of new Mobile Handsets to all Branch Postmasters (i.e. End Users) under Darpan 2.0 Android Mobile App. 11,814 mobile devices have been supplied to Branch offices.
Maharashtra circle has opened 40 lakhs India Post Payment Bank accounts during the current financial year, contributing to a total of 1.5 Cr. of IPPB accounts since inception. IPPB also provides third party products viz. GIC. Besides this, IPPB also provides generation of Live Certificates for the Pensioners. During last year, 56,491 live certificates were generated.

7th October 2024 – Mails and Parcels Day
Customer meets were conducted for customers to inform about the new initiatives taken under Mail and Parcel and obtain feedback on the services offered.
Workshops on Dak Ghar Niryat Kendra for exporters were organised with focus on the benefits and facilities provided by Dak Ghar Niryat Kendra.
Maharashtra Postal Circle participated in a webinar organized by the Pharmaceutical Export Promotion Council of India viz. Exports Solutions through India Post for Pharmaceutical Industry which was attended by approx. 50 key manufacturers in the pharmaceutical industry. This event aimed to discuss various aspects of pharmaceutical exports, including logistics, regulatory challenges,
and market opportunities. The participation of the postal circle highlights the importance of efficient logistics and delivery services in supporting the pharmaceutical sector, especially in a time when the
industry is expanding globally. By collaborating with industry leaders, the Maharashtra Postal Circle can enhance its services to better meet the needs of pharmaceutical manufacturers and ensure timely delivery of products.
8th Oct 2024 – Philately day
Interactive session at schools were held for DHAI AKHAR – “The Joy of writing : Importance of Letters in a Digital Age‘. The competition is being held from 14th September to 14th December 2024. Details are available on www.indiapost.gov.in. Quiz and other activities were also arranged. Seminars were conducted for the Philatelists to promote philately.
A special cancellation on Philately Day was released alongwith postcards on Agri Products of Maharashtra and Goa by Shri Amitabh Singh, Chief Postmaster General, Maharashtra Circle. A permanent pictorial cancellation was also introduced at Airoli Node Post Office. The permanent Pictorial cancellation depicts the elegant bird Flamingo. Two postcards on Flamingos were also released. The philately material is available at all the bureaus in the circle.
9th Oct., 2024 – World Post Day
A special cancellation with Augmented Reality was released by Shri. Amitabh Singh, Chief Postmaster General, alongwith a postcard on the theme of UPU World Post Day, “ 150 Years of Enabling Communication and Empowering peoples across Nations.”
Postathon Walk Relay was held at various locations in the circle, promoting the message of “Fit Post, Fit India”. This event was started with a tree-planting ceremony, “ek Ped Maa Ke Naam”
10 th Oct., 2024 – Antyodaya Diwas
Awareness cum Aadhar enrolment and updation camps will be organized in tribal, hilly and rural/remote areas and urban slums. People will be made aware of the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), Social Security Pensions, Jan Suraksha Schemes and other products and services of the Department.
11 th Oct., 2024 – Vittiya Sashaktikaran Diwas with emphasis on girl child empowerment
Special emphasis on girl child empowerment through financial literacy and inclusion programs would be held. Dak Community Development Program (Dak Choupal ) will be held within the Maharashtra circle with active participation of all stake holders from Central, State and Local Government bodies. PLI procurement drives will be held under Dak Choupal. The Dak Community Development Program (DCDP) aims at bringing all Welfare schemes of Central Government, State Government and Local authorities at one platform exclusively for beneficiaries. It also includes raising awareness among the members of public about all prevalent schemes and the means to avail such benefits. POSB quizzes are organized for the customers, agents, GDS and Departmental staff.
