EESL kickstarts its energy efficiency measures in the Union Territory of Ladakh


As a first step, the company will distribute 40,000 LED bulbs to consumers

The efforts are a step ahead towards enabling a carbon neutral future for Ladakh

Leh, March 28, 2023: Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a joint venture of Public Sector Undertakings under the administration of Ministry of Power, is all set to take a step ahead in the vision of enabling a carbon neutral future for Ladakh. In the august presence of Hon'ble Lt Governor of Ladakh, Brigadier (Dr.) B D Mishra, and Hon'ble Member of Parliament, UT of Ladakh, Shri Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, & Hon’ble CEC-LAHDC, Leh, Adv. Tashi Gyalson, the company kickstarted its efforts to launch energy efficiency measures in the Union Territory of Ladakh on Tuesday. 

Also present during the occasion were senior dignitaries from EESL including Mr Vishal Kapoor, Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Animesh Mishra, Chief General Manager, Head, Sales & PR, Mr. Nitin Bhatt, Senior Manager- PR & Sales, and Mr Girja Shankar, General Manager (Tech) and Head, corporate Driven Programmes. 

In collaboration with Power Development Department, District Leh-Ladakh, EESL will replace 40,000 60W incandescent bulbs with 10W LED for the citizens in the district. These bulbs can help in saving approximately 8.76 million units of electricity annually, and help reducing CO2 emission amounting to 7446 tonne each year. Additionally, they can help with monetary savings of approximately ₹ 3 crores annually.  

Hon'ble Lt Governor of Ladakh, Brigadier (Dr.) B D Mishra said, “For Ladakh, achieving carbon neutrality is a development vision which requires a collaborative effort of every individual residing here. Implementing energy efficiency measures in this unique land will go a long way in preserving the ecology of this unique land, which is home to thousands of tourists and citizens alike. After the success of UJALA and Streetlighting National Programme, we trust that EESL will do a great job in increasing the energy efficiency portfolio of Ladakh and making our citizens more climate conscious.”

Hon'ble Member of Parliament, Ladakh, Shri Jamyang Tsering Namgyal said, “Carbon neutral Ladakh mission has been envisioned as a Citizen Movement, where the focus is to impart energy literacy to the masses. Such initiatives can help people understand the importance of adopting energy efficiency and energy conservation measures which can help them save significantly on their monthly electricity bills, and participate actively in reducing their individual carbon footprint.”

Mr Vishal Kapoor, Chief Executive Officer, EESL, said, “Climate Changes poses irreversible risks to our environment and ecology. This showcases EESL's commitment to support India's Nationally determined contributions (NDCs) targets as well. A joint venture of NTPC Limited, Power Finance Corporation, Rural Electrification Corporation and POWERGRID, Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) was set up under the Ministry of Power to facilitate implementation of energy efficiency projects.
