ICAR-CIFE Celebrated 66th Foundation Day with Enthusiasm and Grandeur
Mumbai, June 6, 2026: The ICAR–Central Institute of Fisheries Education (ICAR-CIFE), Mumbai, celebrated its 66th Foundation Day with great enthusiasm and participation at its Yari Road Campus on Saturday.
The programme was graced by Shri Saurabh Katiyar, IAS, District Collector and District Magistrate, Mumbai Suburban District, who attended as the Chief Guest. The function was presided over by Dr. N. P. Sahu, Director, ICAR-CIFE, Mumbai.
The celebrations commenced with the arrival of the Chief Guest, followed by the traditional lighting of the lamp and invocation song. An ICAR song was presented, after which Dr. N. P. Sahu delivered the welcome address and highlighted the institute’s achievements and contributions to fisheries education, research, and extension.
In his address, Dr. N. P. Sahu briefed the gathering on the major accomplishments of the institute during the past year. He highlighted various technologies developed by ICAR-CIFE for sustainable fisheries and aquaculture development, ongoing national and international research projects, scientific publications, patents, trademarks, and copyrights secured by the institute. He also elaborated on the activities of the ABI incubation centre and emphasized initiatives such as Fish Swad, Ornamental Fish Fair, Industrial Meet, and Aqua Udan, which are helping strengthen entrepreneurship, industry linkages, innovation, and outreach in the fisheries sector.
During the event, several institute publications were released, showcasing the institute’s recent scientific advancements and outreach initiatives. Outstanding students, researchers, faculty members, and staff were recognized through the distribution of Institute and Sports Awards.
Addressing the gathering, Shri Saurabh Katiyar, IAS, appreciated the significant role played by ICAR-CIFE in strengthening the fisheries and aquaculture sector through quality education, cutting-edge research, and capacity building. He stated that it is the responsibility of district and local administrations to support research institutions that contribute to the economic development of the country. He assured that the administration would continue extending support to institutions like ICAR-CIFE in their developmental and research activities.
Interacting with the students, the Chief Guest encouraged them to excel in whichever field they choose in the future—whether research, academics, private industry, entrepreneurship, or business. He emphasized that beyond professional success, it is equally important to become a good human being and a responsible citizen committed to the welfare of society and the nation.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks, followed by a Road Map Presentation for the Upcoming Year by Dr. K. N. Mohanta, Joint Director (Acting), ICAR-CIFE, Mumbai, outlining the institute’s future plans, developmental activities, and strategic priorities.
An alumni meet, lunch, and cultural programme added to the festive spirit of the occasion, providing an opportunity for alumni, students, faculty members, and staff to interact and celebrate the institute’s rich legacy.
Established in 1961, ICAR-CIFE has emerged as India’s premier institution for fisheries higher education and research. The 66th Foundation Day celebration served as a fitting occasion to reflect on the institute’s remarkable journey and reaffirm its commitment to excellence in fisheries education, innovation, entrepreneurship, and national development.
