L H Hiranandani Hospital Organizes Breast Cancer Awareness WALK to Advocate for Early Detection and Prevention.

Breast Cancer with advanced stages is catching up

more among young women in India -- Study Reveals

Mumbai, 11th November 2024: In a powerful initiative to raise awareness about breast cancer and its rising impact on young women in India, Dr. L H Hiranandani Hospital at Powai, Mumbai hosted an early morning ‘Breast Cancer Awareness Walk’. Over a thousand participants joined the event to learn about breast cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment options, pledging to spread awareness in their communities and localities.

In addition to the walk, participants were engaged by a live skit (Nukkad) that highlighted a common issue: how women often overlook early symptoms of breast cancer, such as lumps, due to busy family responsibilities. The skit illustrated the life-saving impact of early diagnosis and proper treatment.

Breast cancer has become the most prevalent cancer among women in India. Disturbingly, the lifetime risk for Indian women has risen, with a shift from one in 26 women at risk to one in 22. Studies also show that breast cancer is affecting more young women than ever before, underscoring the urgency for early detection and regular screening.

Dr Niranjan Hiranandani - Chairman of the Hiranandani Group, who actively supports the annual walk, emphasized the importance of vigilance and self-care. "This event is a reminder not to ignore even minor signs that could lead to serious illness. Caring for oneself not only protects you but also safeguards your family, community, and society from the impact of cancer" he said.

Dr Sameer Kulkarni - CEO of Dr. L H Hiranandani Hospital, highlighted the hospital’s commitment to early detection. “Annual mammograms and routine breast exams are our best defense against late-stage breast cancer,” he said. “Our hospital offers advanced diagnostic tools and a dedicated team of specialists to support patients at every stage.”

Dr Namita Pandey - Breast Onco-Surgeon at Dr. L H Hiranandani Hospital, advised participants on the importance of self-exams and regular clinical screenings. She stressed four key factors for reducing cancer risk: a balanced diet, regular exercise, stress management, and adequate sleep.

Since its inception of Breast Cancer Awareness in 1985, Breast Cancer Awareness Month has aimed to educate women globally about early detection. Mammograms remain one of the most effective tools in the fight against breast cancer, allowing for early intervention and better outcomes.
