Nanavati-Max Hospital lays foundation stone for expansion; aims to be one of the largest hospitals in Western India



Mumbai, May 9th, 2022: Dr. Balabhai Nanavati Hospital (Nanavati-Max Super Speciality Hospital), Mumbai embarked on an ambitious expansion plan that would add over 600 beds to its existing capacity of 350 beds, by 2024. The foundation stone of the new building was laid today on the premises of the hospital by Shri Aaditya Thackeray Honorable Cabinet Minister of Tourism and Environment, Government of Maharashtra. Dr Abhay Soi, Chairman and MD, Max Healthcare; Shri Anil Parab, Minister of Transport; Shri Gajanan Kirtikar, Member of Parliament, Mumbai; Shri Parag Alwani, Member of Legislative Assembly and senior officials from BMC were also present at the ceremony.


Shri Jairaj Thacker, President of the Balabhai Nanavati Hospital Trust along with other trustees were also present to mark this occasion.


The new additions will significantly enhance the capacity of the hospital by over 600 beds. Post expansion, the hospital will have over 950 state-of-the-art patient beds. The new building is expected to be commissioned by 2024. Post the expansion, Nanavati-Max Hospital will be amongst the largest private sector hospital in western India. 

This expansion is at an investment of over INR 700 Cr and would create employment opportunities for over 5,000 doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers. Also, 20 % of the beds will be earmarked for patients from the economically weaker section of society to provide quality healthcare. This will make a 180 bed facility available on completion of the entire project for the economically weaker patients.

Dr. Balabhai Nanavati Hospital carries a luminous legacy. The foundation stone of the hospital was laid by the first Chief Minister of Bombay State, Shri B. G. Kher on August 4, 1946. It was blessed by the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi. The Hospital was inaugurated by the first Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in 1950. The hospital’s cancer wing was inaugurated by Mother Teresa. For the past over 70 years, the hospital has been serving the community with its 350-plus bed facility that presently employs over 1,500 doctors, nurses and other full-time staff. 





Addressing the gathering at the ceremony, Dr Abhay Soi said, “The expansion will help us serve residents of Mumbai as well as various parts of Maharashtra, better. It will house world class medical technology and will have several new clinical programs. Once completed, the new hospital building will help generate new avenues of employment to thousands of healthcare workers and staff. It will also serve the weaker sections of the society by providing free treatment to thousands of needy families every year.”

Nanavati-Max Hospital has Maharashtra’s largest Telemedicine Centre, that serves more than 63 rural and urban locations across the state. 

During the Covid pandemic the Hospital distinguished itself by dedicating its clinical, operational and infrastructural resources to fight Covid 19. Over 150 beds were dedicated to treat over 6,000 Covid 19 patients in the past two years. In addition, over 8 lakh citizens across 500 locations in Maharashtra were inoculated with COVID-19 vaccines to support the world’s largest vaccination drive.
