In a landmark effort to promote inclusivity and celebrate the achievements of children with disabilities, the Ali Yavar Jung National Institute of Speech and Hearing Disabilities (Divyangjan) [AYJNISHD(D)], under the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, observed the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) with a series of inspiring events. Aligned with the global theme "Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future," the highlight of the day was the launch of a ‘Sports Meet’ for children with disabilities under the age of six from CDEIC of AYJNISHD(D). The event aims to nurture sporting talents, celebrate abilities, and foster inclusion from an early age. The Sports Meet was inaugurated by Ms. Jiya Rai, a 16-year-old para-swimmer with Autism Spectrum Disorder and the youngest and fastest swimmer to cross the English Channel. The event was graced by Shri Zamir Dhale, Director of the Society for the Empowerment of the Deaf-Blind (SEDB) India, as the Guest of Honour, and Shri Adv. Ashish Shelar, MLA, as the Chief Guest.
Addressing the gathering, Shri Adv. Ashish Shelar, MLA, emphasized the importance of recognizing and leveraging the unique abilities of ‘Divyangjan.’ He reiterated the vision of "Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas" advocated by Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and praised AYJNISHD(D) for its dedicated efforts in empowering persons with disabilities. He also lauded Shri Zamir Dhale for his pioneering contributions to skill development for the Deaf-Blind community.
Event Highlights included painting competition on 2nd Dec. and ‘Inclusive Walkathon’ held today from at 3pm, was a vibrant event that saw enthusiastic participation from more than 150 persons with disabilities, staff, students, family and community members. The walkathon, with placards displaying awareness messages on accessibility, inclusion, which began at AYJNISHD(D) premises and proceeded along Hill Road, Bandra West, raised awareness about accessibility and inclusion. The ‘Nukkad Natak’ on Indian Sign Language (ISL) which is a dynamic street play by students showcased the significance of learning ISL to empower persons with disabilities and advocating for their leadership was performed at the premises of Bandra West Police Station.
This unique IDPD celebrations underscored the transformative role of sports, leadership, and community engagement in building a sustainable and equitable society. Through these activities, AYJNISHD(D) reinforced its commitment to championing accessibility, inclusion, and the leadership of persons with disabilities.
