Sonneratia alba is one of the 20 species of mangroves seen along the coast of Maharashtra. This species commonly known as ‘Sweet-scented Mangrove Apple’ was declared as ‘State Mangrove Tree’ by the Government of Maharashtra on 22nd September 2020. This initiative has helped to raise awareness about importance, conservation and protection of mangroves.
Maharashtra Postal Circle issued a Special Cover on 26th July, 2022 on Sweet - scented Mangrove Apple Sonneratia alba Maharashtra State Mangrove Tree for awareness regarding protection and conservation of Mangroves.
Shri. Amitabh Singh, Postmaster General (Mails & BD) Maharashtra Circle handed over the first album of the Special Cover to Hon'ble Chief Minister, Maharashtra State Shri Eknath Shinde and Dy. Chief Minister Shri. Devendra Fadnavis.
The following dignitaries were present on the dias, Shri B Venugopal Reddy, Principal Secretary (Forest), Shri Y.L.P.Rao, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest and head of Forest Force and Shri N. Vasudevan, Managing Director, Forest Development Corporation of Maharashtra Ltd and Shri Sunil Limaye, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest( Wildlife).
