Today marks the beginning of the 5th Marine Census operations which involves training of the supervisors, recruitment and training the village wise data enumerators, followed by the actual census activity spread across 3 months. The entire operation will be completed by December 2025.

5th Marine Fisheries Census Goes Digital: VyAS-NAV App

In a major preparatory step for India’s 5th Marine Fisheries Census (MFC 2025), a mobile application VyAS-NAV has been launched for the digital based data collection with an aim to boost transparency and efficiency. Marking a shift from traditional method to a geo-referenced, app-based digital system, the MFC 2025 will cover a 1.2 million fisher households nationwide bringing in real-time validation. This mammoth exercise is coordinated by the Department of Fisheries (DoF) of the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). VyAS-NAV was developed by the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) which is the nodal agency for implementing the marine fisheries census in nine coastal states. VyAS-NAV app will be used by supervisors for field verification of fishing villages, fish landing centres and fishing harbours. This is a foundational step towards ensuring comprehensive coverage and accuracy of the census frame.  This app has features to record summary picture of villages based on primary and secondary sources. The supervisors are staff of CMFRI, Fishery Survey of India and the Fisheries Departments across the coastal states.

About Marine Fisheries Census-2025

The Marine Fisheries Census (MFC) -2025 focuses on the exhaustive, precise, and timely documentation of every marine fisher family, fishing village, fishing craft and gear, as well as infrastructure facilities associated with fishing harbours and fish landing centres across the country. Unlike in the past, customized mobile and tablet-based applications created by CMFRI will be used for data collection in a bid to reduce manual errors and accelerate data compilation for policy-level use. This MFC is a process that starts with the signaling of field operations and ends with the reporting. The reference period where the household enumeration takes place is the core activity. In this case it is November - December 2025. Various constituents of this process are referred to as census operations. As of now, many such activities are planned in the pre core census phase. The first of it is, validation of Marine Fisheries villages is inaugurated today. This will be followed by a round of workshops followed two rounds of training. These all, form part of the Marine Fisheries Census. Roughly 3500 villages and 1.2 million households will be covered in this exercise at various points in time. The village enumeration will be finalized by May- June, while family level data and other facilities will be covered during Nov-Dec, which will be done by enumerators from the village and probably fishing community. In nutshell the operations span from April to December. The village list finalization and landing centres data will be covered by staff of CMFRI, FSI and DoF and the same has started from today. The core activity, scheduled for November–December 2025, involves trained enumerators preferably from the local community, visiting each marine fisher household with smart devices. This is preceded by a robust preparatory phase. Emphasis will be given to record finer details of fishers like their demographic and socio-economic status, alternative livelihood options, and how and where government schemes can influence their status, all collected through a robust online digital platform. Officials will train enumerators in digital data collection and will validate village and infrastructure details using VyAS-NAV.

About Aquaculture Insurance

The Pradhan Mantri Matsya Kisan Samridhi Sah-Yojana (PM-MKSSY), a sub-scheme launched under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana offers a comprehensive aquaculture insurance. The aquaculture insurance focuses on mitigating risks and extending financial incentive particularly to small and marginalized farmers. Through the National Fisheries Digital Platform (NFDP), the Sub-scheme offers seamless digital access to insurance, helping safeguard the incomes of fishers and fish farmers against unexpected losses while also promoting better tracking and formalization within the fisheries sector. Eligible beneficiaries include registered aquafarmers, firms, companies, societies, cooperatives, Fish Farmer Producer Organizations (FFPOs), and other entities involved in the fisheries value chain as identified by the Department of Fisheries. For intensive aquaculture systems such as recirculatory aquaculture systems, the premium is capped at ₹1 lakh per farmer for 1800 m³. Farmers can choose between Basic Insurance, which covers losses from natural calamities and other parametric risks, and the Comprehensive Insurance, which includes Basic Insurance and disease coverage. Additionally, Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), and women beneficiaries are eligible for an extra 10% incentive, further promoting inclusivity. The insurance covers one crop cycle only thereby stabilizing income and encouraging investment in aquaculture.

Notably, the government has introduced Aqua Insurance for the first time, offering dedicated financial protection to aquafarmers. This landmark initiative ensures targeted insurance coverage, digital accessibility, and focused support for marginalized communities in the fisheries sector. The beneficiaries awarded today were Shri D.R.Ravikumar, Tamil Nadu, Shri Mohan Sathiyamoorthy, Tamil Nadu, Shri Sivaramakrishnan, Tamil Nadu, Shri Gandhi Palanivelu, Tamil Nadu, Shri Patnala Subrahmanyam, Andhra Pradesh, Shri Penki Ravi Kumar, Andhra Pradesh, Shri Chiluvuri Ravi Teja, Andhra Pradesh and Shri Korapati Venkata Subba Lakshmi, Andhra Pradesh.

Railways is driving demand, bridging gaps, and seeking industry input to transform Steel Logistics” – Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, Hon’ble Minister of Railways

Day 2 of Steel Conclave 2025 showcases Session on Conducive Logistics Infrastructure for Steel Sector

*April 25, 2025, Mumbai:* On Day 2 of Steel Conclave 2025, a pivotal session on “Conducive Logistics Infrastructure for the Steel Sector” spotlighted the importance of creating a seamless, integrated supply chain to unlock the sector’s full potential. The session brought together key policymakers and industry leaders to chart the way forward for efficient steel transportation across the country.

Underscoring the government's commitment to this cause, *Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, Hon’ble Minister of Railways, Communications, and Electronics & IT* who attended the session through video conferencing, emphasized the Indian Railways’ evolving role in transforming the steel logistics landscape. He highlighted three key areas:

1. Enhancing Demand for Steel: Through massive infrastructure development and rail expansion projects, Indian Railways is directly contributing to increased steel consumption across the country.

2. Filling the Gaps: The Railways is actively working to bridge missing links in the steel supply chain by improving last-mile connectivity, integrating multimodal networks, and expanding freight corridors.

3. Inviting Industry Collaboration: Shri Vaishnaw called upon industry stakeholders to provide actionable inputs on how to further streamline and strengthen steel transportation, signaling a strong push for public-private collaboration.

Shri Vaishnaw, stated, “In the last 10 years, our PM Shri Narendra Modi Ji has put huge emphasis in developing railways, especially its infrastructure, it’s technology and increasing all the aspects of railways. In last 10 years the government has constructed 34,000 kms of railway tracks, these include gauge conversion, doubling, tripling and in some case quadrilling and new lines which is almost the size of German railway network. We have electrified 46,000 kms of railway tracks that’s more than Germany & France. In the last year alone, we constructed 1255 flyovers and underpasses which is a new record. Same is the case with LHB coaches, locomotive production and wagon production. In the 11 years, we have manufactured 42,000 LHB coaches, last year alone, we manufactured 5700 LHB coaches. We have become world’s largest locomotive manufacturers at 1681 locomotives produced. 2 lakh wagons have been inducted in the last 10 years. Just last year we inducted 41,000 wagons. All this is creating huge demand for steel sector. This is going to spur the steel industry in a very big way. Our capital investment in railways infrastructure, safety and in rolling stocks combined is about 2,56,000 crores.

Shri Vaishnav said, “From the beginning of Railways till 2014, India had 125 KMs of Railway tunnels, and from 2014 to 2025, we have constructed 468 KMs of new railway tunnels. That is the pact at which the work is going on which will increase the demand for stee. I request the industry to focus on quality, focus on timely supply and the requirement of quality and specifications of railway is met.

He further highlighted the role railway is playing in carrying steel & raw material. He said that PM gave a very important technological tool- The PM Gati Shakti Portal. This tool is GIS based tool, where more than 700 layers of information is available. We are today able to use this technology and plan for every gap in railway network. We have mapped every production and demand point. For example, starting with mines, going to the production center than from there to major consumption centers. Then we put this entire date into railway network, from this a series of small and big projects came out which basically enhanced the connectivity. At some places, a small doubling will serve the purpose, at other places, quadrilling might be required. At some places, we found that the entire area needs a master plan and other place needed a new railway corridor has to be constructed. In Chhattisgarh, we have sanctioned a project from Kharsia to Parmalkasa, 5th & 6th line which is from the eastern border to the western border of Chhattisgarh, completely new lines will be constructed which will decongest the Chhattisgarh lines.  Since June 2024, about 15 new projects have been approved which are very important for connectivity of railways. This is the thought process at which we are working.

He ended his address by appealing to the industry to come up with new ideas, we can help you create those solution by working jointly and make sure that your work becomes simpler. We started Gati Shakti Cargo Terminal policy in December 2021, the idea was how can we help the transporters to create terminals which connect with railway networks seamlessly which was a big reform and it got very good response. The industry came up with its points about teething troubles, we immediately revised the policy, and in 2022 we published the Gati Shakti Cargo Terminal Policy. Because of this approach, within a short time frame, we have been able to construct 100 Gati Shakti Cargo Terminals. These are all multi model logistics terminals.

The session also featured an eminent panel of speakers who shared insights on the opportunities, challenges, and innovations shaping steel logistics in India:

Shri M.B. Patil, Hon’ble Minister for Large and Medium Industries and Infrastructure Development. Govt of Karnataka

Shri Sandeep Poundrik, Secretary Ministry of Steel, Govt. of India

Shri Amitava Mukherjee, Chair FICCI mining committee and Chairman cum Managing Director, NMDC Ltd & NMDC Steel Ltd

Shri Gajraj Singh Rathore, Co-chair FICCI steel committee and whole-time director & COO JSW Steel Ltd

Shri Ranadhir Reddy Senior Vice President, Railways & Inland Terminals, SCO, DP world

Shri Suresh Mutneja, Chairman & Managing Director, Classic Products Private Ltd

Shri Sushil Kumar Rathi, Director, Allcargo Logistics

*Shri M B Patil, Hon’ble Minister for Large and Medium Scale Industries, Government of Karnataka* , addressed the gathering and reaffirmed the state’s commitment to enabling world-class industrial infrastructure and logistics parks to support steel and allied sectors. He said "Our strategic location, abundant mineral resources, skilled workforce, and strong logistics connectivity — including rail, road, and ports — make Karnataka a natural choice for steel manufacturers and investors. The state is actively promoting industrial parks, integrated logistics zones, and clean energy adoption to ensure long-term competitiveness for the sector."

*Shri Sandeep Poundrik, Secretary, Ministry of Steel, Government of India* , emphasized the strategic push for slurry pipelines and broader infrastructure support for the steel sector. "For India to achieve its vision of becoming a global leader in steel production, the creation of efficient, cost-effective logistics infrastructure is non-negotiable. One of the most critical components in this infrastructure landscape is the development of slurry pipelines. These pipelines can drastically reduce the transportation cost of iron ore and other raw materials, minimize environmental impact, and relieve pressure on road and rail networks."

*Shri Amitava Mukherjee, Chairman and Managing Director, NMDC* , delivered the Welcome Address and Context Setting, noting that with India poised to become a global steel powerhouse, robust logistics infrastructure is essential to support sustainable and scalable growth.

*Shri Gajraj Singh Rathore, Whole time Director & COO, JSW Steel* , focused on the steps JSW Steel has taken to strengthen its logistics capabilities and align with the industry’s evolving needs. "We’ve invested significantly in enhancing our multimodal capabilities, including dedicated rail corridors, port-side logistics infrastructure, and improved last-mile connectivity."

*Shri Sushil Kumar Rathi, Director, Allcargo Logistics* , emphasized the role of digitization and use of AI platforms in building a future-ready supply chain for steel.

*Shri Suresh Mutreja, Chairman & Managing Director, Classic Products Pvt. Ltd.* , spoke about the importance of inclusive infrastructure development that also caters to mid-sized enterprises.

*Shri Ranadhir Reddy, Senior Vice President, Railways & Inland Terminals, SCO, DP World* , discussed how inland terminals and technology-driven logistics solutions can optimize steel freight.

The session served as a dynamic platform for dialogue between government and industry, reinforcing a shared vision for building a world-class logistics framework that supports the steel sector’s rapid expansion. With a strong push for multimodal connectivity, technological integration, and infrastructure investment—including slurry pipelines, dedicated freight corridors, and industry-led innovation—India is poised to create a future-ready steel logistics ecosystem that is efficient, sustainable, and globally competitive.

Maharashtra Governor C. P. Radhakrishnan applauds the institution’s 150-year journey

Mumbai, April 25 – Maharashtra Governor C. P. Radhakrishnan lauded the Bombay YMCA’s 150-year-long legacy of secular service to society, emphasizing that despite its Christian origins, the organization has remained inclusive and committed to the welfare of all. Speaking at the Sesquicentennial celebration today at Mumbai’s Jamshed Bhabha Theatre, NCPA, Mumbai the Governor praised the YMCA’s enduring contribution to youth development, sports, and community empowerment.

The Bombay YMCA (Young Men’s Christian Association), despite having ‘Christian’ in its name, has upheld a secular mission for the past 150 years, said Maharashtra Governor C. P. Radhakrishnan during the organization’s landmark celebration. He commended the YMCA’s consistent social work and called its contribution to youth and sports development “inspirational.”

The Governor also recalled how, during the 1990s, many Indian entrepreneurs stayed in YMCA hostels during their visits to London. In a solemn moment, he paid tribute to the victims of a recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam and remembered Pope Francis with reverence.

Sohela Hayek, President of the World YMCA, hailed Bombay YMCA’s journey as a "rich tradition" rather than just a numerical milestone. “Since 1975, this institution has maintained a unique identity in this bustling city. Through its work in education, shelter, healthcare, sports, and life skills, the Bombay YMCA has become the city’s lifeline,” she said. She added that the World YMCA remains committed to addressing global issues of peace, trust, and equality.

Nam Boo Won, Secretary General of the Asia-Pacific YMCA, praised the organization’s physical, mental, and spiritual initiatives, especially its efforts to uplift marginalized communities through education and life skills.

In Bombay YMCA’s 150-year journey, the institution’s service and commitment have played a lion’s share. Vincent George, President of the National YMCA, pinpointed the same and credited the dedication of past and present office-bearers for Bombay YMCA’s achievements. Former General Secretary Stanley Karkada expressed hope that the organization’s work will continue to inspire future generations.

The event began with a welcome address by Bombay YMCA President Noel Amanna, who highlighted the organization’s roots and the support that made its programs successful. A documentary showcasing YMCA’s historical journey since 1875 was screened, followed by the release of a coffee table book and commemorative souvenir by Governor Radhakrishnan. The event drew many distinguished figures from national and global YMCA movements.

Tata Memorial Centre Launches ‘MenCan’ Initiative to Address Rising Burden of Male Cancers in India

Mumbai, 24 April 2025 : In a significant step towards advancing cancer care for men in India, the Tata Memorial Centre (TMC) has officially launched MenCan, a dedicated initiative by the Urologic Oncology Disease Management Group (URO DMG). This nonprofit, non-commercial initiative is focused on addressing prostate, penile, and testicular cancers—three types of male cancers that are seeing a rising incidence across the country.

Speaking about the initiative, Dr. Vedang Murthy, Professor of Radiation Oncology at TMC, said, “The MenCan initiative represents a vital step in raising awareness and enhancing care for male cancers. Our goal is to promote early detection and provide patients with the tools they need to make informed decisions.”

As per the Global Cancer Observatory (GCO) 2022, India is projected to witness approximately 41,736 new cases of prostate cancer by 2025, with a growing burden also observed in testicular and penile cancers—estimated at 4,640 and 11,264 new cases respectively. Alarmingly, India also has the highest incidence of penile cancer globally. These cancers, though often under-discussed, have a profound impact on men’s health and quality of life. Prostate cancer, typically affecting men aged 50–64, is increasingly detected at an advanced stage in India, with nearly 40–50% of cases being metastatic at diagnosis. In contrast, testicular cancer, which generally affects younger men, has a high survival rate if detected early. Penile cancer remains a major concern in the Indian context, especially in urban areas with a high age-adjusted incidence rate.

At TMC, the rising trend is clearly evident, with new prostate cancer diagnoses increasing from 700 cases in 2021 to 900 in 2023. The hospital also treats approximately 150 cases of penile cancer and 250 testicular cancer cases each year. Given the lack of awareness and reluctance among men to seek timely medical help, MenCan aims to fill a critical gap in public education, prevention, support, and research.

The MenCan initiative is structured around several key focus areas: awareness and education, prevention and early detection, patient support and advocacy, survivorship and rehabilitation, and research and development. In recent months, MenCan has undertaken numerous impactful efforts including survivorship meetings for penile and testicular cancer patients, the launch of MenCan Care—a virtual support group for patients and caregivers, and the development of a confidential helpline (8451009760) offering emotional and informational support. Furthermore, MenCan has introduced India’s first patient campus navigation app to assist those visiting the ACTREC campus and is building a social media presence to extend outreach.

To ensure sustainability and scale, MenCan is working towards expanding its services across all Tata Memorial Centres in India. The initiative has also received strong endorsement through the association of singer and public figure Mr. Shaan, who lends visibility to the cause and supports its message of hope.

Operating under the guidance of senior leadership at TMC—including Dr. Sudeep Gupta (Director, TMC), Dr. CS Pramesh (Director, TMH), Dr. Pankaj Chaturvedi (Director, ACTREC), Dr. Shripad Banavali (Director, Academics, TMC), and Dr. Navin Khattry (Deputy Director, ACTREC)—the core team driving MenCan includes Dr. Amit Joshi (Professor – Medical Oncology), Dr. Gagan Prakash (Professor – Surgical Oncology), Dr. Santosh Menon (Professor – Pathology), Dr. Vedang Murthy (Professor – Radiation Oncology), Mr. MSR Murthy (Project Manager), and Mrs. Shraddha Bonkar Dethe (Uro DMG Coordinator).

Calling for collective action, Dr. Murthy added, “MenCan is more than a program — it’s a movement toward a healthier future for Indian men. We invite everyone to join us in spreading awareness and supporting this mission.”
