Episode Two of the MUBI Podcast Celebrates India’s Love for DDLJ

 

 

June 7, 2021 - Global distributor and curated streaming service MUBI, recently announced the launch of its first original podcast, MUBI Podcast, which will be hosted by arts and travel reporter Rico Gagliano. Season one, titled “Lost in Translation”, will focus on films that have great importance in their home country, but are lesser known by international audiences and critics. Listen to the trailer and subscribe to the podcast here.      

     

Episode one, which is now available, looks at Paul Verhoeven's second feature Turkish Delight (1973). While one of Verhoeven's lesser known films to international audiences, it remains the most well-attended domestic film in the history of the Netherlands.

 

Episode two, which airs on June 10 will focus on Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (aka DDLJ). Bollywood fans the world over know 1995's DDLJ as the ultimate feel-good, globetrotting rom-com, but even they might not fully realise how much of an impact it had in India, where it caught the imagination of a country in transition and practically created a new Bollywood subgenre. The film still runs in an iconic theatre in Mumbai, officially making it the longest running film in Bollywood history with over 25 years in the Cinema.

    

The episode will feature interviews with veteran actor and DDLJ co-star Anupam Kher, costume designer Manish Malhotra, critic Anupama Chopra, who literally wrote the book on this classic rom-com, and a host of other critics and scholars about this cult classic.

Film critic Anupama Chopra adds, "DDLJ was a landmark film. It captured the zeitgeist in a way that few films have and it still continues to work its magic.  I was thrilled to be able to discuss the film, what it meant then and what it means now on the MUBI podcast.  I hope the podcast and the excerpt from my book on the film give people an insight into the film and Hindi cinema."

 

The documentary-style podcast will be available on all major podcast platforms and on MUBI’s online publication Notebook. There are a total of 6 episodes that will be aired this season, the next one. Every MUBI Podcast will cover nearly every continent with each episode exploring a different film and country, providing a window into cinema cultures around the world. The unique stories behind the films will be brought to life with movie clips, music, and original interviews with filmmakers, critics, academics, and historians.
