Mumbai- There are no reliable figures for global prevalence of infertility, but estimates suggest that nearly 72.4 million couples globally experience fertility problems. As per the WHO estimates 60–80 million couples worldwide currently suffer from infertility. It varies across regions of the world and is estimated to affect 8–12% of couples worldwide. We need to break the traditional myth that infertility is only in females. Male infertility is a complex and multifaceted issue that affects a significant number of couples worldwide. Unlike common misconceptions, infertility is not solely a female concern; in fact, approximately 40-50% of infertility cases involve male factors.
Commenting on this Dr. Sandesh Parab Senior Urologist and Andrologist from Solaris Hospital, Thane says, “According to a recent report by WHO on the status of infertility in India, of all infertility cases, approximately 50% is due to “male factor” infertility. Several factors contribute to male infertility, with one of the primary culprits being abnormal sperm production or function. Conditions such as varicocele, a swelling of the veins that drain the testicle, can impede sperm development and compromise fertility. Another critical aspect is sperm motility, referring to the sperm's ability to move effectively. Poor sperm motility can hinder the sperm's journey to meet the egg, reducing the chances of successful fertilization. Additionally, structural abnormalities in the male reproductive system, hormonal imbalances, and genetic issues can contribute to male infertility. Lifestyle factors, including excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, and obesity, further exacerbate the problem.”
Dr. Sandesh Parab Senior Urologist and Andrologist from Solaris Hospital further added, advancements in medical technology have enabled various diagnostic tests to identify the specific causes of male infertility. Semen analysis, hormone testing, and imaging studies can provide valuable insights into the underlying issues. Treatment options range from lifestyle modifications and medications to surgical interventions, depending on the root cause. Male infertility underscores the importance of comprehensive reproductive health assessments and mutual support for couples navigating the challenges of conception, specifies that evaluation of male infertility is very much important in association with evaluation of female infertility. There are many couples who conceive after male infertility treatment. There are many reversible conditions which give good results after surgical intervention. Hence males should also not hesitate to get treatment for good outcomes.
