World Sight Day - 12 October 2023

Mumbai- Every year on the second Thursday of October, World Sight Day is celebrated all over the world. This day is celebrated to create awareness among people about eye-related cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and various eye disorders. Thursday, October 12, 2023 is World Sight Day and on this occasion, various activities will be implemented across the country to take care of eyes at the workplace. According to studies, approximately 1 billion people worldwide suffer from various types of eye problems. All these vision problems can be prevented or eliminated through proper education and awareness. The theme of World Sight Day 2023 is "Love Your Eyes at Work." The main concept of this theme is to promote the importance of eye care in the workplace. World Sight Day was first established in 1998 in collaboration with the Lions Club International Foundation and the World Health Organization (WHO). The main focus of this day is to create awareness about good eye health and make eye care services available to everyone around the world.

Giving more information about this, Ophthalmologist & Eye Surgeon Dr. Prashant Bhagat from Apex Group of Hospital Group said, "80 percent of people in the world have eye problems, but most of them can be cured by using glasses. Continuous work in front of a computer can lead to a disease called computer vision syndrome, so those who use computers, TVs, mobiles and other screens should follow the 20-20 formula. Eye health can be maintained better if used Every twenty minutes, it is very important to move 20 feet away from the screen for 20 seconds. This reduces eye strain. Due to Corona, 27.5 crore people in the country have weakened eyesight and diabetes is high among them. In order to maintain the health of the eyes, the eyes need enough rest, cleanliness of the eyes and consumption of vitamin A in the diet should be sufficient. Wash eyes with cold water four to five times a day, use anti glare screen, open eyes many times.``

Eye diseases that can affect people with diabetes include diabetic retinopathy, macular edema (which usually develops along with diabetic retinopathy), cataracts, and glaucoma. All can lead to vision loss, but early diagnosis and treatment can go a long way toward protecting your eyesight. Sometimes if the diabetes is not adequately treated for a long time it can even cause a tractional retinal detachment and death of the retina, therefore, it is necessary for a person with diabetes and high blood pressure to check their eyes every year"

One in eight persons above 50 years in India is a diabetic; One in every 46 diabetics is blind; and one in seven has some form of impairment in their vision due to high blood sugar levels, according to a diabetes and diabetic retinopathy survey by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in collaboration with Ministry of Health and Family Welfare carried out between 2015 to 2019. Thirty-one million Indians became diabetic between 2019-2021, according to a paper touted as “one of the first comprehensive studies covering all States of India” to assess the non-communicable diseases (NCD) burden in the country. Diabetic retinopathy can develop in patients with type 1 diabetes  and type 2 diabetes and will cause vision loss without prompt diagnosis and treatment, added by Ophthalmologist & Eye Surgeon Dr. Prashant Bhagat from Apex Group of Hospitals, Borivali.
